MK Council is set to purchase 70 modular homes to be built in Fishermead to house homeless families.
The 70 two-bedroom modular houses will be used to temporarily house homeless families while the council works with them to find a more permanent solution. It is expected that families could live in the properties for up to two years, during which they will have access to support services to access new and better opportunities for training and work.
Initially, the Council expected to lease the properties from a private company but has now decided to buy the homes outright. The decision will deliver better value for money for the council and supports its policy of keeping families together locally in MK. People will be given two-year fixed tenancies to allow them enough time to get back on their feet. Work on the Fishermead housing site is expected to be completed by September. Cabinet member with responsibility for housing, Councillor Emily Darlington said: “Buying these modular homes will ensure that we’re able to provide the best support possible to families who have been left with very few options. Council colleagues will support the families to get back on their feet before helping them find a more permanent solution.”Milton Keynes Council is currently supporting over 900 families living in temporary accommodation.
